Welcome to Sarah

GV Brisbane is pleased to welcome Sarah as the newest member of its admin and student support team.

"Hi! My name is Sarah Matthews and I’m new to Global Village Brisbane. Although I have only been here a few weeks and have never worked in this field, I am having fun. My time here so far has been interesting. I am in charge of Reception work and also Student Activities; and have been tempted to join in on some of the student activities myself. I'm really glad to be working here and am looking forward to meeting everyone - right after I start remembering the student’s names here in Brisbane."

Cooking option popular with students… and staff!

GV Brisbane's activity programme is a great way for students to get to know eachother in a more relaxed environment outside the classroom whilst still using English in a practical context. Wednesday afternoon cooking has become one of the most popular activities for the students with delicious recipes from all over the world being attempted. This week it was pancakes with jam and cream.

Diet is not a word the students are really thinking about as one of the best parts of taking part in this activity is that it ends with the students eating what they have cooked. Actually the staff at Global Village are very fond of this activity as there are often leftovers which find their way into the teachers' room!

English & Music Option Class

GV Brisbane teacher Phil Evans is a keen musician who has studied jazz saxophone but now focuses on vocal training and will complete a degree in Music from QUT later this year. In order to share his passion for music with his students, Phil has created a 4-week English & Music option currently being followed by 14 students from a wide range of nationalities and backgrounds.

Over the weeks, students learn how to recognise different styles of music, to review music as well as to look at the lyrics and content of songs. In the final week, students look at film clips to discuss how the vision and music are used together and his next goal is to have students create an original video clip with their own lyrics!

For the students taking the English & Music option, one thing is very clear – music is an international language that can really help get across many cultural and linguistic barriers.
