Business English at GV Brisbane

A challenging and rewarding alternative to General English, GV Brisbane's 12-week modular Business English programme is ideal for intermediate to advanced-level students who want to develop their language skills in a highly-stimulating learning environment.

The programme consists of 20 hours per week classroom study plus an additional 5 hours per week of Guided Individual Learning over 3 modules, each lasting 4 weeks.

The Teacher

With a degree in marketing and a strong business and teaching background, Nick Keane is the ideal teacher to lead the Business English programme. He feels that the wide range of backgrounds and nationalities present in the Business English classroom makes for some fascinating intercultural learning as students bring their own personal business experience to bear in class. The majority of students in the current cohort, who hail from Colombia, Japan, Brazil, Korea and Mexico, already have business experience or qualifications and for many the main benefit of the course is to take their existing knowledge and competencies and use them in an English-language context. Nick ensures that the content of the programme remains current and relevant by using real case studies, articles and reports as the basis for discussion, with communicating ideas forming a major part of the programme. Students are assessed on a variety of assignments, including a business plan, an export plan and a survey, all of which are presented to the group with the aid of Powerpoint and Nick is always on hand to provide technical as well as language support and encouragement.

The Student

Arriving at GV Brisbane from Colombia with a degree in Economics and a background in sales, Julian Villegas believes that his employment prospects when he returns home will be greatly enhanced by following the Business English programme. A recent highlight of the programme for Julian was an assignment in which students were tasked with making a three-minute sales presentation to the rest of the class about an imaginary product.

Julian's interest in Colombian handicrafts and jewellery led him to promote them to the class and now at weekends he is developing his entrepreneurial spirit and making a little extra pocket-money by selling jewellery at local craft markets around Brisbane and offering his classmates special deals!
