VICTORIA, CANADA

TAP Students Share Their Experiences

On October 21, 2007, a group of teens arrived in Victoria from Guatemala. The students are part of the GV Victoria Teen Activity Program (TAP), a special program for students between the ages of 13 and 18. The group studies English in the morning, then enjoys a full range of activities in and around the city of Victoria. Here, the students tell us about their English studies, excursions, and other impressions of Canada.

Sofia: "Before traveling to Victoria, I was a bit nervous because my sense of direction is not that good. But Victoria is a very organized, clean and beautiful city. I feel safe here. Global Village Victoria is an interesting place to study, and I like the way the teachers treat students. We are comfortable to ask lots of questions. As for our host families, they care for us very much and treat us like their own. What I like best about being in Victoria is experiencing a sense of security and trust in people on the streets."

Ana Gabriela: "I was also nervous before I came here, but people in Victoria are very nice. The Teen Activity Program is very nice; I like it because we can have many new experiences, like visiting the museum and learning about the salmon run at Goldstream Park."

Giancarlo: "In my case, I didn’t really realize that I was going to be in Canada for a whole month until I was at the airport with my bags. I felt nervous, eager and anxious. My first day in Victoria, I felt a bit lost – like in outer space! But the next day, we went to school, met the staff and took the bus for the first time. Our classes are unusual for me, because there is a lot of speaking and real English."

"Each TAP trip is cool because you have the freedom to explore the whole place and learn at the same time. I am impressed that my host family cares for me, but also helps me be independent and responsible for my daily life. As well, I have noticed that Canada has lots of charity for disabled people and special needs."

Chloe: "I was happy about coming to Canada. My English class is perfect, because I love languages and there is more speaking in my GV Victoria class than in my country. I’ve enjoyed all TAP activities, but especially the Butterfly Gardens. Victoria is a bit colder than Guatemala, but there are many places to visit and I love the people."
