Melbourne Cup at GV Brisbane

The Melbourne Cup is known as "the race that stops a nation" and on Tuesday 6th November, students at GV Brisbane joined the rest of Australia in watching the country’s most famous horse race. The celebrations at GV Brisbane included a competition to create the most fashionable Melbourne Cup hat, a fashion parade, a horse auction and of course, the big race itself, live from the track on the big screen in the student lounge. Students from many different nations and cultures really got into the spirit of things, cheering for their horse and enjoying this uniquely Australian cultural and sporting experience!

Afternoon Intensive Programme Commencing 31 December 2007

For advanced level students who want to maximize the benefits of studying during the Australian summer holidays, GV Brisbane still has places available on the General English Intensive Afternoon programme, which will run from 31 December 2007 to 25 January 2008. Classes will be held from Monday to Friday between 1:00pm and 5:00pm (with no breaks!). From 1:00pm to 2:00pm students will participate in regular option classes, then from 2:00pm to 5:00pm specialist teachers will be focussing on a different language skill each day: on Mondays the focus will be on vocabulary building, on Tuesdays grammar, on Wednesdays speaking and listening, on Thursdays reading and writing, and on Fridays there will be a comprehensive review of the week’s learning. English Out & About Commencing 28 January 2008

Now firmly established as one of GV Brisbane's most popular courses, English Out & About will feature two different levels from January 2008. The two courses have the same objective of familiarizing students with everyday English in real-life situations, but Out & About A is suitable for pre-intermediate / intermediate students, whilst Out & About B is aimed at intermediate / upper-intermediate students. Both courses will run consecutively from 28 January 2008, meaning that on completion of Out & About A, students can directly enter Out & About B and really make the most of having Brisbane as their real-life classroom!

Commiserations to GV Brisbane’s soccer team, who put up a brave performance but ultimately went down fighting in the GV Queensland Tri-Shield Soccer Tournament, held on the sports ground at GV Noosa’s new Caloundra Campus.

Despite having a number of talented players from Brazil, Colombia, Korea and Japan, GV Brisbane could not handle the excellent passing game of the runners-up GV Noosa or the pace of the eventual champions, the home team from Caloundra, who clinched the title in a dramatic period of extra time after a highly-controversial penalty decision!

In spite of their disappointment at the result, the legions of loyal supporters who made the trip up the Bruce Highway from Brisbane had a great day out, made new friends with their fellow-students from Noosa and Caloundra, and enjoyed a sausage-sizzle courtesy of the Caloundra teachers, who did a great job making the visitors from Brisbane and Noosa feel welcome. Beaten but unbowed, GV Brisbane will be back for another shot at the title in March.
