Give a Christmas Toast with Power Speaking Skills

December 2015

Visitors to Victoria love our quaint architecture, tree-lined streets and neighborhoods full of character.

Students can increase their confidence and public speaking abilities in English by taking Power Speaking at GV Victoria.

This 12-week program covers three types of speeches: Persuasive, Informative, and Demonstration.

Every morning involves an extended facilitated discussion with the instructor, followed by a class-wide debrief. At week’s end, students make a longer, video-recorded speech that is used for peer and self-analysis.

If you are looking to receive feedback on your speaking, error correction and tons of practice in the comfort of a welcoming group of classmates, then GV Victoria’s Power Speaking would be a great choice.

More details on the program can be found in the GV Victoria 2016 Power Speaking Brochure.

The Magic of Victoria’s Festival of Lights

    October 2015

Victoria is a city famous for its winter events and displays. Butchart Gardens is a popular place to visit in the wintertime, especially around Christmas. The gardens celebrate yuletide by putting together an exhibit of over 100,000 Christmas lights and garnishing the park displays with decorative balls, plants and ribbons. The Victoria Legislature Buildings are also adorned with nearly a thousand red and green lights, installed by a single person.

At Christmas time, the historic Empress Hotel hosts a festival of trees, which displays dozens of Christmas trees decorated by local businesses, and the Craigdarroch Castle, a Victorian-era mansion that reflects the lifestyle of the wealthy in Canada's early days.

GV Victoria school activities highlight the spirt of the season: lights, curling, skating, live theatre, musical performances, decorations, crafts and special baked treats. Come experience the magic with us.

High School Prep & Teen Activity Programs at GV Victoria

    September 2015

GV Victoria is celebrating the wrap-up of several months of successful teen-focused programs this week.

For Study Blocks 04 and 05, High School Prep (HSP) students trickled in to take some General English lessons in order to meet the Level 4 requirement for the High School Prep program starting in June.  Two times per year (June-August and November-January), High School Prep students take a Super Intensive program consisting of General English in the morning, followed by two blocks of EAP elective classes in the afternoon.

These classes feature the vocabulary and English discussion points required to succeed in Canadian High School: English for Social Studies, Math & Science and Computers & Social Media.

Teens looking for fewer lessons and more social activities can now enjoy Summer and Winter Teen Activity Programs (TAP) in Victoria during July and August.  Summer activity programs are jam packed with fun and interesting excursions, as well as some thrilling challenges like the high ropes and zip line course in Metchosin, while the winter program highlights sports like curling, skating, hockey and snowboarding.  With our mild climate year-round, Victoria is an ideal destination every season!

EAP a Growing Trend at GV Victoria

    March 2015

GV Victoria - Requests for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) requests are rapidly increasing these days, with more students than ever seeking to improve their English skills for higher education purposes.
On the most recent survey of GV Victoria students, 22% reported that their purpose for studying English was to prepare for college or university.  With almost one quarter of our students focused on advanced education in an English speaking country, our Academic Team has been hard at work, developing additional EAP elective classes, selecting high quality texts and resources, and liaising with our University Pathways & Partners to link students with opportunities in Canada.
Pictured here is the EAP Reading & Writing class, which has attracted serious students from Colombia, Japan, Libya, Liechtenstein, Mexico and Saudi Arabia. Congratulations to all!

    Learning English For
    The Big Day

    July 2013

GV Victoria enjoys hosting major student events, like dances, dinner parties and all-school video projects. As our biggest event this summer, we are thrilled to be hosting a theatrical Wedding Dinner Party, which will involve GV students, teachers, staff and – most importantly – some real-life fiancées, Ryan and Allison.

Ryan is a GV instructor and a documentary film artist who recently created GV Victoria’s newest elective class, Slang in the Media. Ryan and Allison will celebrate their marriage in August, but before the “Big Day”, they have agreed to be our guests of honour at the GV Victoria wedding-themed dinner party and dance on July 19th.

Leading up to the event, students will have the opportunity to take part in English lessons, multi-media projects, workshops and activities, all centred on the theme of marriage around the world. The Power Speaking class's speeches and slideshows will also be presented at the party. You can keep up with all the excitement by checking the “GV Wedding Party” event page on our facebook fanpage. Hope to see you there!
