Bonjour, Victoria! French Group Lessons Are Coming to Global Village

For over 25 years, Global Village has helped people from around the world find their voice in English. Starting June 16th, Global Village Victoria is adding a new language and an exciting new chapter is about to begin.
Why Study French? Why Now?
French is one of Canada’s two official languages, and proficiency in it opens doors in ways that few other languages can. For those pursuing Canadian Permanent Residency through Express Entry, strong French scores can significantly boost an application’s Comprehensive Ranking System points. For students considering post-secondary education, TEF and TCF exam results are recognized for admission to select colleges and universities in Quebec and France. And for many learners, the motivation is simply personal, a lifelong desire to connect with one of the world’s most widely spoken and celebrated languages.
For those who love to travel, French is one of the most rewarding languages to carry in a pocket. Beyond the obvious joy of navigating Paris with confidence, speaking even a foundational level of French transforms the experience of visiting a French-speaking destination. Conversations become connections, menus become adventures, and interactions with locals take on a warmth and authenticity that no translation app can replicate. From ordering a café au lait in Montreal to bargaining at a market in Dakar, French opens doors that would otherwise stay closed, and the world of French-speaking destinations is far larger and more diverse than most people realize.
French Group Lessons Are More Useful Than You Think
French is an official language in 29 countries and spoken across approximately 50 states and territories worldwide, making it one of the most useful languages a traveller can learn.
Most people associate French with France, but the language is spoken across every continent on earth, making it one of the most geographically widespread languages in the world. Here are just a few of the places where French will serve a traveller well:
- Quebec and New Brunswick, Canada — French is one of Canada’s two official languages, and Quebec is home to one of the world’s most vibrant French-speaking cultures, from the cobblestone streets of Old Quebec City to the cosmopolitan energy of Montreal.
- Geneva, Switzerland — Home to the United Nations and the Red Cross, Geneva is one of the world’s great international cities, and French is the language of daily life, diplomacy, and fine dining.
- Brussels, Belgium — The capital of the European Union, Brussels is a multilingual city where French is one of three official languages and the dominant language of the city centre.
- Monaco — This glamorous principality on the French Riviera has French as its sole official language, making it an unforgettable destination for any French speaker.
- Luxembourg — A small but remarkably multilingual country where French is used alongside Luxembourgish and German as an administrative and everyday language.
- Haiti — The only French-speaking nation in the Caribbean, Haiti offers a rich and distinctive culture shaped by its unique history as the world’s first Black republic.
- Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire — Often called the “Paris of West Africa,” Abidjan is a dynamic and culturally rich city where French is the official language and the gateway to one of Africa’s most vibrant regions.
- French Polynesia — For those dreaming of turquoise waters and tropical islands, French Polynesia is an overseas territory of France where French is the official language and the islands of Tahiti and Bora Bora await.
